Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

It should be noted that due to the Presidential debate this evening, there are going to be pre-emptions. Make sure to check your local listings! In case this is helpful for you, Matt Carberry has compiled a Google sheet detailing many schedule changes nationwide.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

While the Red Cross and Red Crescent were generally believed to neutral symbols, there were many who believed that the cross contained Christian connotations (or the crescent Muslim connotations) and thus were unwilling to abide by the Geneva Convention requirements that their protected medical personnel, buildings, and equipment depict one of those symbols. Thus, a 2005 diplomatic conference added the Red Crystal—a diamond—to the cross and crescent already protected.

I suspect that the show will receive undue criticism today online from viewers who believe that deliberate obfuscation somehow makes for an invalid trivia question. Curveballs exist, and sometimes you have to face a curveball if you enjoy trivia. Not every ball is going to be pitched straight down the middle of the plate for you.
