Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show follows John (Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine), two spies who assume new identities, enter into an arranged marriage, and covertly carry out high-risk missions. As spouses do! Throughout Season 1, the Smiths get their espionage on while navigating complex romantic feelings for each other. After finally failing their third mission, the two learned their mysterious boss hihi asked Jane to intervene in John’s plan, then clued John in on her location. The revelation, the messy mission, and the recent news of Jane’s infidelity were enough to make John admit defeat, so he messaged hihi, admitted their target had escaped, and was told to await further instructions. John informed Jane he’d be gone in the morning, but hihi had other plans for the couple.

As expected based on the Season 1 finale’s title, “A Breakup,” Episode 8 opens with confirmation that John left Jane and their high-risk life behind. After getting a glimpse of his empty room, we check in with Jane who’s in bed with Max the cat, staring at the ceiling, unsure of what to do next. After forcing herself out of bed and opening her laptop, she sees the aforementioned next steps from hihi: “TERMINATE! Take our your Smith.” Uh oh!

Jane goes to text John, then puts down her phone and get breakfast for one instead. As she’s eating in the kitchen, a bullet whizzes past —then another, and another — and suddenly she realizes a hitman is outside her window. Is it John? Did he receive orders to kill her, too?! She can’t see. But whoever took the shots killed — brace yourselves — MAX! Noooooo!

Viewers quickly learn that John didn’t try to kill Jane, because he’s spending a leisurely day hanging with his mom, who apparently lives in the city! As the two return home from errands and open the door to her apartment, John senses something’s off and sends her off to the salon so he can investigate. After discovering his mom’s house is rigged with explosives, he texts Jane, “we need to talk now,” and the two rendezvous at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art where it quickly becomes clear they each think the other tried to kill them.

Over the course of its first season, Mr. & Mrs. Smith progressively raised the stakes and ramped up the action sequences as missions got more high-risk, but in a finale twist reminiscent of the film, Jane and John go up against each other in an epic, exhausting showdown. Jane traps John inside the museum’s revolving door with a bomb. He escapes. High-speed foot races, fist fights, and weapons summon attention of bystanders and police, but the two successfully escape capture. Jane narrowly manages to lose John and sneak into her home, only to find Denise, JOHN’S MOTHER, waiting inside to have a heart-to-heart. Meanwhile, John seeks access to their back door by asking Hot Neighbor (Paul Dano) if he can cut through his apartment — but not before he snoops around for proof of an affair with Jane.

Denise tells Jane that Michael (yes, John’s real name is MICHAEL) moved her to the city two months ago and gave her an emergency key to their place. She urges her to give their marriage another shot, explaining Michael needs to feel safe, and once he does he’ll be his true self. Unfortunately, things aren’t going so smoothly for John, who snoops a little too hard and uncovers a wall in Hot Neighbor’s basem*nt of photos of him and Jane beside blueprints of their apartment. When Hot Neighbor finds him, John holds him at gunpoint and asks who he’s working for. “Sotheby’s,” the distressed hottie says. Turns out, he’s a real estate agent who’s dying to sell the Smiths’ snazzy house. “No one understands how you were permitted to build it,” he says.”It’s a jewel. It’s my Moby Dick. Please don’t kill me.”

A heated John cools off and has a drink, but when Hot Neighbor offers to lend him The Prophet so he can connect with Jane on a deeper level, the spy resumes his mission, hops the wall to his own back yard, and prepares to kill his wife. An adrenaline-pumping battle ensues as the couple takes shots at each other throughout the house, carelessly destroying their expensive decor and shouting the occasional “You alive, babe?” to check in. From fist fights to creative weaponry, the two beat each other until they’re burnt out. Finally, John ties Jane up, but rather than killing her, he stabs them each with the John Turturro Truth Serum so they can finally have an honest conversation.

Their killer instincts are replaced with goofy giggles and life-altering truth bombs. Jane reveals she failed her CIA psych exam because she has sociopathic tendencies and she places a blue marble in a jar whenever she does something sociopathic. (The jar currently has 78 marbles. It’s fine!) She claims her dad doesn’t want to know her and she didn’t sleep with two targets, she only said that to hurt John. In between admissions, John says he got kicked out of the marines early because of asthma/anxiety. He also says he wants children “more than anything” and he’d have kids with Jane “in a heartbeat.” Oh yeah, and he had several shots at Jane on the stairs and in the kitchen but didn’t take them. The two share an iconic upside down kiss on the floor, then learn they didn’t try to kill each other after all. So who did??! The other John (Wagner Moura) and Jane (Parker Posey), of course! How do we know? Because they just let themselves into the house and are holding the truth serum trippers at gunpoint!

Turns out, super high-risk only means one thing. The annoying couple “finalize Smiths,” aka kill all the Smith couples who decide they want out of the spy life. Any hope for our John and Jane looks lost, until suddenly, John #2 sneezes. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that this man sneezes in three! So Jane takes advantage of his allergy attack and shoots him in the eye, making a run for it with John. As Jane #2 fires back, the couple races to their panic room, only to realize they have a single bullet left once inside. Not only that, but John was shot! And things don’t look good for our guy!

As Jane’s processing the situation and frantically searching for a plan, she takes a moment to ask John his thoughts, which means a lot to him in the dire moment. He says it’s going to be dark in a few minutes and suggests they attack when Jane #2 goes to turn on the light. Jane tries to keep him awake by sharing her real name and promising they can have a kid together, but when it’s clear he’s fading fast and needs medical attention, she decides to open the panic room door and go up against Jane #2 with her single bullet. Rather than giving viewers a front-row seat to the showdown, Mr. & Mrs. Smith takes us outside the apartment, where we see the flash of one…then two…then three (!!!) shots fired upstairs. Since we know Jane only had a single bullet in her gun, it’s heavily implied that she shot at Jane #2, then Jane #2 shot back twice — perhaps once at her and once at John — suggesting they’re done for. But is there a chance that the Smiths we grew to know and love throughout these eight episodes make it out alive? Perhaps…

The thought of Jane and Jack being “finalized” by these bozos (especially after they realized their feelings for each other) is gut-wrenching, but before we have too much time to reflect on the big showdown, the sun is shining and Hot Neighbor is knocking on the Smiths’ door to deliver a book! Can you guess which one? He lets himself into the open apartment, finds the place absolutely trashed, and shouts, “I’ll just leave it here! OK! Bye!” As he walks down the sidewalk, he calls a fellow real estate agent and giddily says, “Buddy! I think they might be ready to sell! We’re gonna sell the sh*t out of this Moby D!” A perfect ending if you ask me!
